Question

Answer

Do I have to use the Scoring Guidelines in RM13004 if we have our own scoring guidelines established over many years?  No, provided that the customer has accepted that the criteria that you are using is acceptable to them then it is acceptable to use your own.
The AS13100 standard requires all characteristics to be used in a Process FMEA. We have thousands of characteristics – surely we cannot be expected to apply FMEA to all of these?  You only get the benefit of these tools where you apply it. It is therefore important that you do apply FMEA to all characteristics. Any characteristic that is out of tolerance can result in safety issues, rework, concessions and delays. This all incurs additional cost. When we have products that we will make for 30 years or more, getting the process design wrong can end up costing us many millions of pounds / dollars. There are many ways of ensuring that the FMEA process can be done efficiently and build on the knowledge of previous FMEAs. These include the use of Reference process FMEAs, the right IT software and team experience.
